Steve Reich: Music for 18 musicians

A unique evening celebrating the dynamism and innovation in modern and contemporary American music and the diversity to be found therein: from the works of composers such as Harrison and Cowell, whose work called upon the music of America’s inidgenous populations and early colonial traditions, to the iconic ‘Music for 18 Musicians’ by Steve Reich, whose music harnessed his distinctly American energy to redefine musical language for all time. Six etudes by the contemporary composer Harold Meltzer, performed here by acclaimed Iranian-American harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani, testify to the continuing seeking, exploratory spirit in American music. Other performers featured at this special event include Jan Rybář’s Prague Minimal Orchestra, violinist Antje Weithaas, and flutist Kristyna Farag

Today there are thousands of festivals, and it is difficult to excel from the lot. Prague Music Performance is one of very few of them! Jan Bartos and his team are so committed that it is guaranteed for the future of this undertaking. Besides master classes by world-renowned musicians, they organize student concerts, and it helps young musicians to let themselves known to the public. I think that the Czech Republic can be very proud of this organization!
